Hat Tricks are one of the rarest moments in cricket. It is one of the remarkable achievements for bowlers which is remembered for many years. A hat trick totally changes the result of the game.
Ipl – being a T20 format has been always advantageous for batsmen while cruel for the bowlers. The invention of new shots, fearless and aggressive cricket, small grounds, etc has made the bowler’s job more difficult.
Over the 12 seasons, the total number of hat tricks in ipl recorded is 19 and has been taken by 16 different bowlers.
1. First Hat trick in ipl
The first hat trick in ipl was taken by Lakshmipathy Balaji. And it came in the very first season of the ipl. He was playing for Chennai super kings against Kings XI Punjab on his home ground, Chepauk stadium in Chennai.
In the last over of the match, 19 runs were needed off 4 deliveries where he claimed a hat trick by taking wickets of Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla, and VRV Singh. In this match, he took a five wickets haul and was awarded as Man of the match.
2. Most Hat Tricks in ipl
Amit Mishra ( 3 )
It’s a matter of pride that our Indian spinner Amit Mishra holds the record of most hat tricks in ipl history. Amit Mishra is also the second leading wicket-taker in ipl history.
Mishra takes his first hat trick in the first season of ipl while playing for Delhi Daredevils against Deccan Chargers in 2008. In this match, he claimed five wickets including a hat trick and awarded as man of the match.
His second hat trick in ipl came in 2011. He was the part of Deccan Chargers and was playing against KXIP. Mishra took his hat trick by dismissing R.McLaren, Mandeep Singh, and R.Harris.
Third Hat-trick of Amit Mishra came in 2013 while he was playing for SRH against Pune Warriors India. SRH was defending the low score of 120 and Amit Mishra claimed four-wicket with a hat trick and awarded as man of the match.
Yuvraj Singh ( 2 )
Undoubtedly, Yuvraj Singh was the best all-rounder India has got. Not only with his batting and fielding but also with his bowling, he won the hearts of cricket fans.
In ipl, Yuvraj was impressive with both bat and ball. He has taken two hat tricks in ipl and holds the record of two hat tricks in one ipl season.
Playing for Punjab his first hat trick came against RCB. He took a hat-trick with the wickets of Uthappa, Kallis, and Boucher. In this match, he also scored 50 runs but though the team was not able to win the match.
His second hat trick in ipl came against Deccan Chargers. While defending a low total, Yuvraj took a hat trick with the crucial wickets of Gibbs, Symonds, and Venugopal Rao. In this nail-biting match, Punjab won by just one run.
3. Rohit Sharma Hat trick in ipl
Today, we all know Rohit Sharma for his hard-hitting abilities. He is the top-class batsman and has created many records. But very few may know his extraordinary record with the bowl.
In ipl 2009, he used to play for Deccan Chargers. While playing against Mumbai Indians, Rohit does something unusual apart from his abilities. He took a hat trick in the match with the wickets of Abhishek Nayar, Harbhajan Singh, and JP Duminy.
With this uncertain and extraordinary performance, Chargers ended up winning the match by 19 runs. While Rohit finished the match with the figures of 4-6 in his two overs.
4. Hat trick in ipl debut match
Andrew Tye- a T20 specialist bowler from Australia holds the record of a hat trick in debut match of ipl. It was the first hat trick of ipl 2017. While playing for Gujarat Lions Tye took his hat trick against Mumbai Indians and finished with match-winning figures of 5/17 in his debut match.
5. Some other records
- Makhaya Ntini is the first overseas bowler who took a hat trick in ipl. It came in the first season of ipl against KKR.
- Ajit Chandila is the first uncapped Indian player to take a hat trick in ipl. He took the hat trick in the first over of the match against Pune Warriors India.
- Sam Curran has taken a hat trick in his debut season of ipl.
