Fab Four in World Cricket, Joe Root falls out

Fab Four in World Cricket

Fab Four is the current best batsmen in world cricket. In the last few years, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson were constantly have been part of this Fab four.

These players are the backbone of their teams and had been constantly scoring runs in all formats. It’s always a part of the debate among cricket lovers about who is the best among these Fab Four in World Cricket.

The players in fab four are chosen on the basis of their ICC rankings, the percentage contribution of runs in team total, contribution in winning the matches, etc. These players mostly bat at number 3 or 4th position which is considered to be the main pillar for putting the big totals on the board.

From last year’s performances, the ICC rankings are changed and so accordingly some changes must also be seen in the Fab Four group.

Root fell out of the Fab Four

From the past few years, Root’s form in test cricket has seen a considerable dip. His average in the test is 48.09 which is considerably good but doesn’t suit his standard. Among the fab four players, only Root’s average is below 50.

In 2017, Root got the responsibility of captaincy on his shoulders. The weight of captaincy has become a major reason for the downfall of his test average.

There is a ten-point difference between Root’s average when he is the captain and when he isn’t. Another reason might be the inexperienced and unsettled top order.

In terms of ranking also, Root has been pushed down. He is not in the top 5 positions of ICC rankings in any of the formats. It’s also true that Root is slightly ahead of Williamson and Smith in white-ball cricket.

But we know that test cricket has more weightage than any other format and that’s why Root will be the first to fall out of fab four if some player out of the group outperforms him.

Now, let’s look at the players performance and a new member of fab four in world cricket.

Steve Smith

Steve Smith who has been banned for one year has made a dream comeback in Ashes. He scored big hundreds (144&142) in both innings of 1st test.

Again after missing 2nd and 3rd tests due to injury, he came up with a doubleton(211) in the 4th test. He was also the leading run-scorer in this series.

Smith has been constantly performing well in tests and also giving valuable contributions in ODI and T20Is. In the latest ICC test rankings, he is at number one position with a rating of 911. Due to his outstanding performance in test cricket, he was able to secure his place in Fab Four.

Virat Kohli

Virat is the only player in fab four who is having an average of 50+ in all the formats. In world cup 2019, he scored consecutively five fifties.

Thereafter, we saw an extremely aggressive batting from Kohli against West Indies in T20Is and ODIs.

He also scored a double ton against South Africa and a hundred against Bangladesh in a day-night test match. He’s been consistent as always and thus remains a fixed part of Fab four.

Kane Williamson

In World cup 2019, Williamson was in a great form. He scored two centuries and two half-centuries in the tournament. He took his team to the finals but unfortunately lost the final against England.

Kane has constantly scored runs in 2019 in all formats. He scored one double ton in a test against Bangladesh. He was in great touch against India in T20Is. In the latest ICC rankings, he is at 4th position in test and on 7th position in ODI.

Babar Azam makes his way into the Fab Four

After many years, Pakistan got such a fluent, classy and consistent batsman. Babar has impressed everybody with his abilities in white-ball cricket. Currently, Babar Azam is the only player who is in the top 5 positions of ICC rankings across all formats.

These outstanding stats show that there is not any reason to not consider him in Fab Four. Recently, Babar has been given the responsibility of captaincy of the Pakistan ODI team. Now it will be interesting to see whether the weight of captaincy raises or lowers his game.

Aakash Chopra, the former Indian cricketer asked a question, “If you are in the top five in all three formats then how can you not be in the fab four in world cricket?

Thus with his outstanding performance in all formats, Babar Azam makes his into the Fab Four of world cricket.

Aakash Chopra also has created his new fab four where he removes Joe Root as well as Steve Smith and has added Babar Azam and Rohit Sharma.
